Appraisals

Fine Art is one of a number of unique categories of personal property which requires specialized knowledge and experience to arrive at credible estimates of value.

Whites Gallery and Open Concepts, Inc. work as a team
We provide professional appraisal of: fine art, decorative art, antiques, collectibles, etc.

Intended Uses of Appraisals

Appraisals may be required for several intended uses:

Insurance Coverage
Insurance Claims
Equitable Division of Property
Divorce Settlement
Estate Administration
Charitable Contributions
Estate Planning

Appraisals, Assessments, or Consulting may be useful for:

Potential Sales Advice
Potential Purchase Advice
General Curiosity and Interest

Fine Art can be an appreciable asset. Typically the value of a work of art will vary over time. Market values increase depending on a variety of factors. An appraisal provides the basis for adjusting levels of insurance coverage or can provide information useful in making decisions as to disposition or acquisition of personal property.

As appraisers we do not authenticate items. However, we can provide expertise and research or provide guidance to qualified resources for that purpose.

Types of Fine Art

Fine Art is created in wide range of media. We appraise: paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and multiples such as prints, etchings and posters. Application of diligent research and sound methodology permit us to evaluate works created by artists from many eras and from around the world. Past assignments have included: Old Masters, 17th through 21st Century artists, emerging artists, Plein Air California artists and many others. Styles ranging from Realism to Abstraction offering portraits, landscapes, still life and other genres are often encountered and estimates of value are successfully in the course of our appraisal assignments.

Qualifications

We are certified in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). All reports comply with the most current USPAP standards. Linda Strack and John McClosky successfully completed the Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts program at the University of California Irvine. We also adhere to the Code of Ethics of the American Society of Appraisers. Each appraisal report includes signed certification.

Fees

Each appraisal or consultative assignment is subject to a scope of work agreed to by the appraisers and the clients prior to the start of the assignment.

We charge an hourly rate based upon actual hours worked. Our compensation is never tied to the value of the property being appraised and cannot ever be contingent upon any specific outcome of the appraisal assignment.

The Appraisal Process

The basic steps in any appraisal assignment are:

1. Witness the existence of the property

2. Inspect the property to properly identify it and document its condition

3. Research and analyze relevant data from the market and other sources

4. Report an estimate of value
